New synthetic drug associated with overdose deaths arrives in Portugal; man arrested

PJ police have arrested a man suspected of trafficking various drugs, among them a new synthetic substance associated with several overdose deaths in other European countries.

A statement on the PJ’s website explains that “considerable quantities of various types of narcotics and new psychoactive substances were found in the suspect’s possession, namely METHAMPHETAMINE, MDMA, KETAMINE and large quantities of N-DESETHYL ISOTONITAZENE – a synthetic opiate from the nitazene chemical family that is much more potent than heroin and even fentanyl, characterised by being highly toxic and associated with several overdose deaths in Europe”.

It was in the context of this investigation that N-DESETHYL ISOTONITAZENE was first identified in Portugal.

The 37-year-old suspect has been remanded in custody, while the investigation (that began last year) continues.
