“Algarve 7s” returns to Vila Real de Santo António

The 6th edition of the international multisport festival is expected to bring over 3500 participants to the region between June 6 and 9.

Algarve 7s is back in Vila Real de Santo António from June 6 to 9 for its sixth edition. Created in 2018, the international multisport festival organised by Portuguese company Sports Ventures will attract over 3,500 athletes to participate in eight disciplines this year.

Until its second edition in 2019, the Algarve 7s was an international tournament exclusively devoted to rugby. However, its rapid and increasing success across borders has transformed it into a multi-sport festival. Today, it features eight sports, uniting clubs and athletes from 30 countries, with a particular emphasis on delegations from France, England, and the USA.

In addition to its sports aspect, Algarve 7s contributes to the development of the Algarve region, specifically Vila Real de Santo António and Monte Gordo, by boosting tourism and the local economy. The economic impact of this event in the area is estimated at more than 1 million euros.

For Sports Ventures CEO José Diogo Trigo de Moraes, “the Algarve’s potential for sports tourism has been pivotal to the event’s growth and in attracting an increasing number of participants. Our year-on-year growth has been remarkable, and today, we have an event that places the Algarve on the global map of sports tourism, which evidently contributes to the region’s economy”.

The festival, aimed at adult athletes, features eight sports this year, five more than in the 2024 edition: Flag Football,Golf, Beach Hockey, Open-Water Swimming, Netball, Padel, Rugby Sevens and Beach Tennis.

The highlight of this year is the debut of five new modalities: Flag Football, a recent Olympic discipline; three beach sports (Beach Hockey, Open Water Swimming, and Beach Tennis), whose events will be held on the stunning Monte Gordo beach; and Padel, which has drawn an increasing number of participants.

However, Rugby Sevens, also an Olympic sport, continues to be the main attraction, bringing together more than 50 teams from 14 countries.

To guarantee the event’s success, Sports Ventures will deploy a team of 180 people to organise and manage the tournaments.

The Municipality of Vila Real de Santo António, Turismo de Portugal, the Rhino brand, and Sociedade Ponto Verde are among Algarve 7s’ key partners.
