So says AMAL president António Pina

The president of the Algarve Municipalities Association (AMAL) has praised the announcement of Albufeira as the location for the region’s future desalination plant, claiming that it will be able to produce “one third of the Algarve’s urban water needs”.

“This is the step we were waiting for,” António Pina said following the environment minister’s announcement last week (see other story on this page).

Pina likened the desalination plant to something of an “insurance plan” for the Algarve with a “good coverage rate”.

“During periods of prolonged drought, we will have better insurance,” he said, adding that he hopes a tender for the plant’s construction will be launched quickly.

The government is planning to launch the tender by the end of 2023, said Minister of Environment and Climate Action, Duarte Cordeiro, in Parliament on Wednesday.
